ÖAMTC urges caution over private drone flights

More than 100,000 private drones are estimated to be in use in Austria, but accidents and crashes continue to occur, ORF reports. A drone licence is required for devices weighing 250 grams or more.

Drones offer new perspectives for landscape photography from above, including in the mountains of Kärnten. However, the Austrian motorists club ÖAMTC warns that strict restrictions also apply in alpine terrain.

“It is certainly not possible to launch drones anywhere,” said ÖAMTC drone expert Thomas Fleer, pointing to nature reserves, Natura 2000 areas and bird protection zones.

Mountain conditions can also change quickly. Visibility, wind and weather may shift rapidly, while high altitudes can affect a drone’s performance. The thinner air can, for example, shorten battery life, Fleer said.

Wild animals and birds of prey may see drones as enemies and attack them, Fleer said. Pilots should therefore avoid disturbing wildlife and protect their equipment.

The ÖAMTC advises pilots to check current conditions before every flight. Information is available through several drone apps, including services from the aviation authority Austro Control and the ÖAMTC.
