Johanna Gapany will not seek third term in Council of States

Johanna Gapany, a member of Switzerland’s Council of States from Fribourg, will not seek a third term in the 2027 federal elections, SRF reported. The FDP branch in the canton announced her decision on Thursday evening.

Gapany told the newspaper La Liberté that she wanted to return to professional life. She was 31 when she was elected to the Council of States in 2019. “I will be 40 in 2028. If I want to return to professional life, now is the right time,” she said.

She did not rule out a later return to politics, including a possible run for Fribourg’s cantonal government.

Gapany is a member of the Council of States’ Science, Education and Culture Committee and Finance Committee. She is also vice-president of its Social Security and Health Committee.
