Italy’s Filarmonica della Scala will honour composer Anton Bruckner at a free outdoor concert on the Danube riverbank in Linz on Friday, ORF reports. The concert begins at 7.30 p.m. and forms the ceremonial prologue to the Brucknerfest Linz 2026.
Conductor Riccardo Chailly will lead the Milan orchestra at the Brucknerhaus concert venue on what would have been Bruckner’s 202nd birthday. The orchestra is closely associated with Milan’s Teatro alla Scala and is internationally renowned.
Rachmaninoff and Tchaikovsky on the programme
The programme opens with Sergei Rachmaninoff’s symphonic poem The Rock, followed by his Piano Concerto No. 4 in G minor. The relatively rarely performed work was written in several versions between 1926 and 1941 and requires both technical skill and strong musical interpretation from the soloist.
Pianist Alexander Malofeev, one of the internationally acclaimed performers of his generation, will take the solo part. After the interval, the orchestra will perform Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4 in F minor, composed in 1877 and considered one of the composer’s best-known and most powerful symphonies.
The Classical Klangwolke is designed to combine a concert experience with a communal event. Organisers say the format is intended to make classical music accessible to people who do not regularly attend classical concerts, while showing that major orchestral works can also make an impact outside the concert hall.
Children’s Klangwolke set for Sunday
The Children’s Klangwolke 26 will take place on September 6 in Linz’s Donaupark, transforming the park into a space-themed experience for children and families. The event explores questions about where happiness can be found and whether it can mean something different to each person.
The story was created by Susanne Stemmer and Titus Vadon and will feature specially composed music. From 2 p.m., visitors can take part in activities focused on discovery and shared experiences. A space village designed by ESERO Austria is among this year’s highlights.
