Two people were injured when a car crashed into a concrete barrier at the northern portal of the Tauerntunnel on the Tauernautobahn motorway near Flachauwinkl in Pongau on Wednesday evening, ORF reported.
Emergency services were alerted shortly after 6 p.m. after the vehicle hit the barrier on the carriageway towards Salzburg. The passenger suffered serious injuries, while the driver sustained minor injuries, according to the Zederhaus volunteer fire brigade.
The Red Cross treated both injured people before taking them to hospital in Schwarzach. An emergency medical helicopter was also called out. The cause of the crash remains unclear.
Recovery work lasted just over an hour, during which the tunnel towards Salzburg was completely closed. Traffic was also stopped before the Zederhaus covered section, according to the ร3 traffic service.
