Swiss government proposes 100 million for mountain accommodation

Switzerland’s Federal Council plans to provide 100 million francs over eight years to modernise accommodation businesses in mountain regions, SRF reported. The government approved the proposal on Wednesday and will now submit it to Parliament.

The programme is intended to trigger a wave of investment in mountain regions. Only businesses that undergo energy-efficient renovations to exemplary standards will be eligible for funding. The money is scheduled to be distributed between 2028 and 2035 through the Swiss Society for Hotel Credit, which is supported by the federal government.

Parliamentary mandate

The programme responds to a parliamentary mandate. Parliament argued that many accommodation businesses in mountain regions lacked the equity needed for investment and faced difficulties obtaining bank loans.

The Federal Council had initially rejected the programme, citing a lack of funds, difficulties with implementation and strong opposition to the proposal during the consultation process. A year ago, it submitted a proposal for a complete revision of the federal law on support for the accommodation industry without the programme.

The latest proposal is a supplementary message to the proposal submitted to Parliament in April 2025. The Federal Council said it was responding to a request from Parliament’s Economic Affairs and Taxation Committee in August 2025 for the administration to draft wording for an investment programme.
