Linz heart surgery pioneer Peter Brücke dies at 90

Peter Brücke, a surgeon, scientist, teacher and healthcare leader who helped shape heart surgery in Linz, has died at the age of 90, ORF reported, citing the Kepler University Hospital.

After completing his specialist training in Vienna and Heidelberg, Brücke moved to the United States, where he gained extensive clinical and scientific experience. That work later influenced his habilitation and proved decisive for his career.

In 1974, Brücke became the youngest medical lecturer in Austria and took charge of Surgery 1 at Linz General Hospital. Under his leadership, the department developed into a nationally and internationally recognised centre for tumour, abdominal, thoracic and vascular surgery.

Brücke also achieved significant milestones in heart surgery. Together with his team, he performed more than 8,000 heart operations from 1978 onwards. With up to 1,200 procedures a year, Linz heart surgery was at that time Austria’s highest-volume facility.
