Summer school opens for 4,400 children in Carinthia

Summer school began for 4,400 children in Carinthia on Monday, two weeks before the official end of the holidays, ORF reported. Attendance is mandatory for the first time for students classified as requiring additional German support, while most children are taking part voluntarily.

At the Bundesschulcluster Feldkirchen, 69 students enrolled, the highest number since the programme began. School head Alexander Kröll said the small groups, averaging 13 to 14 students, allowed for individual support.

Without homework or exam pressure, the programme is less formal than the regular school routine. Students said they could have more fun, work together and revise material. Some said their parents had encouraged or required them to attend, while others welcomed the opportunity to refresh their knowledge.

The summer school also offers practical experience to student teachers supporting the classes. Sarah Wernig, who is completing a master’s degree in teaching, said the programme helped her become familiar with the realities of the profession.

About one in six participants in Carinthia is required to attend because they need additional German-language support.
