Bavaria to deploy 612 newly qualified police officers

Bavaria will deploy 612 newly qualified police officers from September 1, broadcaster BR reported on Sunday. Most will join police forces in Munich, while others will be assigned to the state border police and a drone defence centre in Erding.

The recruits have completed their training or university studies, according to Bavaria’s Interior Ministry. They will be distributed among the state’s police headquarters and other institutions, including the riot police and the State Criminal Police Office.

Forty-five officers will join Bavaria’s border police. The drone competence and defence centre in Erding, which began operating in spring, will receive 22 new staff. Their deployment will further strengthen Bavaria’s ability to respond to drone attacks, Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann said.

After accounting for departures, particularly through retirement, the police force will record a net increase of 300 personnel, Herrmann said. Bavaria’s police currently have more than 45,700 positions, according to the ministry. A further 200 positions are planned for 2027 under the 2026 and 2027 budget, bringing the total to a new record. Since 2008, more than 8,800 additional positions have been created, the ministry said.

Distribution of the new officers

Police headquarters in northern Upper Bavaria will receive 64 officers, while southern Upper Bavaria will receive 36. Munich will receive 120 and Lower Bavaria 48. The Upper Palatinate will receive 48, Upper Franconia 22, Middle Franconia 82 and Lower Franconia 22.

North Swabia will receive 62 officers and South-West Swabia 39. The Bavarian riot police will receive 48, the State Criminal Police Office 18, the Police Administration Office one and the Bavarian Office for the Protection of the Constitution two.
