Rear-end crash injures mother and two children in tunnel

ORF reported that a rear-end collision in the Karawanken Tunnel on the A11 motorway injured a 36-year-old woman and her two children on Saturday afternoon. The tunnel was closed in both directions for about 90 minutes.

The German woman had slowed her car at about 2.30 p.m., apparently because of heavy traffic. A 21-year-old German driver behind her was unable to stop in time despite braking hard and crashed into her vehicle.

The woman and her children, aged five and eight, suffered injuries of undetermined severity and were taken to the hospital in Villach. The second driver and his passenger were not injured.

Both vehicles had to be towed away. The tunnel was closed to all traffic in both directions from 2.30 p.m. until about 4 p.m.
