Firefighters rescue uninjured calf from slurry pit in Spielberg

The Sachendorf Volunteer Fire Brigade rescued a calf from a slurry pit at a farm in the municipality of Spielberg in the Murtal district on Thursday, ORF reported.

The calf had fallen into the pit and could not free itself. Wearing heavy breathing apparatus, firefighters climbed down a ladder and first held the animal’s head above the slurry, incident commander Hannes Naverschigg said.

They carefully lifted the exhausted calf out over the ladder. After about 30 minutes, it was rescued without any apparent injuries and handed back to the farmer.

Firefighters then thoroughly cleaned the calf and took it to the calf barn. Its owners named it Florian in thanks for the successful rescue and in reference to the patron saint of firefighters.
