Vienna’s Stadion Bridge opens early after modernisation

Vienna’s Stadion Bridge will reopen to traffic on Friday, one week earlier than planned, ORF reported. The bridge connects the Vienna districts of Leopoldstadt and Landstraße.

The bridge will begin serving the extended number 18 tram line on September 5. The 82-metre-long and 26-metre-wide structure has been renovated since February 2025 to meet new requirements.

The road layout has been reorganised, with tram tracks running through the centre of the bridge and space provided for city buses. A nearly four-metre-wide, physically separated two-way cycle path has also been added. Motorised traffic will have one lane towards Leopoldstadt and two lanes towards Landstraße.

Structural work included reinforcing the main and cross beams and installing a new drainage system. Special beams were also installed near the A4 motorway as a protective barrier. The work was carried out while traffic continued. Final work will continue until autumn but will not affect traffic.
