Klagenfurt utilities rebuild Strandbad and resume Maiernigg operations

Klagenfurt city utilities will invest 5.6 million euros in rebuilding the Strandbad lakeside swimming complex on Lake Wörthersee, ORF reports. The project will include new catering and sanitary facilities, and the catering operation will be put out to tender.

The complex’s central building is outdated, according to the utilities. It currently houses a kiosk, self-service catering, sanitary facilities and administrative rooms. The building also urgently needs to be made flood-proof.

The utilities’ supervisory board has approved the new central building and the required investment. Construction is due to begin after the bathing season ends in October 2026, with completion planned in time for the following year’s season.

The design will take the existing flood risk into account and form part of an overall architectural concept. Its appearance will be based on the renovated changing-room block in the southern part of the Strandbad and the new catering and reception building at the Klagenfurt campsite.

The sanitary facilities will also be made suitable for winter use. This will create the basis for possible year-round operation.

The current catering tenant has a lease until the end of the 2026 season. The catering contract for the 2027 season and subsequent investments will be put out to tender.

Maiernigg to return to direct management

The utilities will also resume direct management of the Strandbad Maiernigg lakeside swimming complex in Klagenfurt from 2027. It is currently leased to an operator. Its catering operation will also be put out to tender, while investments are planned in changing-room blocks, lounging areas and catering facilities.
