Artist Hermann Serient has died at the age of 91, ORF reported. He died last Friday. Serient was originally from Melk in Lower Austria and had lived and worked in Rohr, in the Güssing district, since 1965.

After training as a goldsmith and attending a jewellery school in Vienna, Serient became a freelance artist and caricaturist for the Wiener Arbeiterzeitung newspaper. His work mostly focused on satirical subjects.

After moving to southern Burgenland in 1965, he produced a large series of paintings about the region and its residents.

From the 1970s onwards, Serient increasingly addressed social and environmental issues. In 1992, he founded his own gallery in Vienna, but soon returned to focusing mainly on painting.

In 2005, the Burgenland State Gallery dedicated a retrospective exhibition to him.
