Supergau festival selects 11 art projects for Tennengau

Salzburg’s Supergau art festival will present 11 projects in the Tennengau region from May 13 to 23, 2027, ORF reported. The projects were selected from 270 submissions and are intended to involve the region and its residents.

The works will be presented at different locations and as mobile festival contributions. At the Adnet quarry, Christian Göthner and Kai-Hendrik Windeler will create a temporary workshop for producing terrazzo with their project “Marmor Zement Wasser (AT).”

Maria Nalbantova and Antoni Rayzhekov’s “Soiltude” will make the ground audible and transmit its sounds live to festivalgoers’ headphones. In cooperation with Holztechnikum Kuchl, Harald Scherz’s “Holy Wood” will use regional timber to create a ring-shaped structure for sitting and lying down.

Projects explore the region’s future

“Fossilien der Zukunft” by Ana de Almeida and Lena Rosa Händle will draw on the collection of Museum Kuchl. Together with young people from Kuchl, the artists will develop a counter-archive about a past that never existed but might have done so.

In cooperation with Theater Abtenau, Theater im Bahnhof Graz will use the investigative walking tour “Apres Schnee” to ask what remains of a place when there is no more snow.

The interdisciplinary international collective Von Null will turn Abtenau’s market square into a brightly coloured place for people to spend time, with opportunities to splash around, in “Forever Jung.”

For “Collagierte Wirklichkeit,” Hannah Jorinde Dörr will explore the history of Oberscheffau through old photographs and stories in an abandoned road maintenance hut. Leon Bernhofer and Hélène Dal Farra’s special project “KLammer” will bring artists, students and local residents together to consider how the hut could be used in the future.

Artists to research the region

As part of a residency programme from September 22 to 26, 2026, participating artists will conduct research in the region. A public gathering in Abtenau on September 23 will give people the opportunity to meet the artists and the Supergau team.

Haiko Pfost, the festival’s artistic director, said he was pleased that local artists were strongly represented in the selection.

“This shows how diverse the perspectives on the Tennengau are and how much artistic potential exists directly here,” Pfost said.

In addition to the selected projects, an artist residency will be held at the Leierhof in Abtenau during the festival in May 2027. The festival, initiated by the Salzburg state government, has previously taken place in the Flachgau in 2021, the Lungau in 2023 and the Pinzgau in 2025.
