Zarits seeks answers on Burgenland finances

Christoph Zarits, chairman of the ÖVP in Burgenland, expects a special session of the state parliament next week to provide greater clarity on the state’s finances, ORF reported on Wednesday.

In an interview with ORF Burgenland editor-in-chief Walter Schneeberger, Zarits said his party was dissatisfied with Governor Hans Peter Doskozil’s response to 10 questions about the finances. The ÖVP had asked for answers by August 15.

“Ten questions, zero answers,” Zarits said. The ÖVP requested the special session because Doskozil would have an opportunity there to respond to the questions, he said.

Zarits said the party felt its criticism had been confirmed by the Burgenland Court of Audit, which had clearly stated that the state was moving in the wrong financial direction and needed to take corrective action.

He said he particularly wanted to know whether Doskozil would accept political responsibility for what he had caused. Zarits also expects answers on why municipalities in Burgenland are in a worse position than those in other federal states and what is happening at the state holding company.

Citizens have the right to know how and for what purpose their tax money is being used, Zarits said.
