Tyrol leads Austria in winter camping stays

Tyrol recorded almost 917,000 overnight stays at its 107 campsites in the first half of 2026, the highest figure among Austria’s nine federal states, ORF reports.

Austria recorded about 2.9 million camping overnight stays between January and June, a 3.6 percent decline from the record level reached in the same period last year. Carinthia ranked second behind Tyrol, followed by Salzburg.

Tomas Mehlmauer, president of the Austrian Camping Club, said camping had been growing more popular in the winter months for several years. February recorded a 27.4 percent increase in overnight stays compared with the previous year, he said, adding that Tyrol was by far the most popular federal state for winter campers.

Despite declines in some months linked to weather conditions and the timing of public holidays and school holidays, camping stays across Austria remained at a high level, Mehlmauer said. Camping had long been an established part of Austria’s summer tourism, while demand for camping holidays remained strong despite weaker weather-affected months.
