Police trial raises concerns over pay and public safety

A new police duty-time model is due to enter a pilot phase in five Austrian districts, including the Leibnitz district, with concerns over working conditions, income and public safety. ORF Steiermark reported that the first findings are expected in October.

The pilot in Leibnitz will begin in September. Police union representative Richard Roßmann said officers expected lower incomes and less flexibility in choosing their working hours.

Officers fear they may have to work more weekends for the same pay. They also expect fewer options for requesting time off and the possible end of 24-hour shifts.

Roßmann said officers were also concerned about the effect on public safety. He said the new model could lead to more closures of smaller police stations, including during the day, as well as fewer patrols.

The Interior Ministry told ORF Steiermark that the pilot districts were still in the planning phase. Their results will be evaluated weekly, with initial findings expected in October.
