railway accident, Strassen, Tyrol

A 10-year-old Italian cyclist was injured when a train hit her as she crossed an unbarriered railway crossing in East Tyrol on Tuesday afternoon, ORF reported.

The girl was crossing the railway on the Drau cycle path in the municipality of Strassen at about 3.40pm. She appears to have either failed to see the train or misjudged its distance at the crossing, which is equipped with light signals.

The train driver applied the emergency brakes but was unable to avoid hitting her. The girl was taken to a doctor’s practice for medical treatment with injuries of undetermined severity.

The rental bicycle she was riding was dragged several metres by the train. Authorities are now investigating whether the light signal system was functioning properly.
