32-year-old man dies after hornet sting in Upper Austria

A 32-year-old man has died after being stung by a hornet in the municipality of Mettmach in the Ried im Innkreis district, ORF reported. The man was stung on Thursday and reportedly had an allergy, but apparently did not have his adrenaline pen with him.

Although an emergency doctor arrived quickly, the man could not be saved.

The death has caused widespread grief in the region. The man, who was from Hohenzell in the same district, was described as helpful and active in several associations. Many people also knew him through his membership in the volunteer fire service.

Hohenzell Mayor Thomas Priewasser told the Oberösterreichische Nachrichten newspaper that the deceased was “simply a good person”. He was always immediately available and helped whenever he was needed, Priewasser was quoted as saying.

The Hohenzell volunteer fire service also published a tribute on Facebook, describing the 32-year-old as not only a colleague but also a friend who was difficult to replace. “We will never forget you,” the post said.

Several events were cancelled as a sign of mourning. The Reblausfest, which had been scheduled for Saturday, did not take place.

Seven deaths a year

Hornet stings can cause severe reactions in people with allergies. In such cases, an adrenaline pen can be lifesaving.

According to the Austrian Road Safety Board, an average of seven people die in Austria each year after being stung by bees, wasps or hornets. Between 2016 and 2025, 68 people died nationwide, including 13 in 2024.

Hospital discharge statistics show that 9,617 people were admitted for treatment after insect or spider bites and stings between 2015 and 2024. That amounts to almost 1,000 hospital stays a year.

The board advises people with allergies to carry an emergency kit with an adrenaline pen after consulting a doctor and to call the emergency number 144 immediately if an allergic reaction occurs.
