Vienna renovates TV-famous Polizeisteg footbridge

Vienna will replace the 35-year-old Polizeisteg footbridge on the Alte Donau because of wear and tear, ORF reported. A floating bridge will provide a temporary crossing until April 2027.
The footbridge in the Donaustadt district is best known from the cult television series Kaisermühlen Blues, where district councillors Erwin Schoitl and Rudi Gneisser regularly met. It connects Kaisermühlen with the small Gänsehäufel area, including the police sports club and allotment gardens.
Work on the new steel and wood structure is scheduled to begin in September. The bridge will be widened from 2.18 metres to three metres and fitted with seven light poles to improve safety, including during the winter months.
The new bridge will retain the distinctive shape of the 133-metre-long existing structure. According to MA 29, Vienna’s bridge-building department, the steel framework will be more resistant and require less maintenance than the previous wooden construction. Wood will still be used for the deck and railings.
Boats will not be able to pass through during construction. Pedestrians will be able to use the floating replacement bridge, while the new Polizeisteg is scheduled for completion in April 2027.
