Vienna completes first homes in Donaufeld development

The first 144 apartments in the An der Schanze section of Vienna’s Donaufeld urban development area have been completed after delays caused by protests from local residents, ORF reported on Monday.

The homes are part of a cooperative housing project by Sozialbau AG. Some were designed specifically for single parents and older people. A total of 1,400 apartments are currently nearing completion at An der Schanze.

The development will also include a kindergarten, a student residence and local cafes. It will feature a new housing model for single parents and families with separated parents, combining private areas or independent housing units with communal spaces to provide both privacy and mutual support.

An der Schanze is the first stage of the Donaufeld urban development project. Initial plans date back to the 1990s, and Donaufeld was first designated as a development area in Vienna’s urban development plan in 2005. The central part is intended to connect the district centres of Floridsdorf and Kagran.

A citizens’ initiative has opposed development in Donaufeld for years, including through legal action in nature conservation proceedings. It continues to campaign against further construction. The city plans to build 6,000 apartments across the entire area.
