Woman dies after fall from Patteriol in Tyrol

A previously unidentified female mountaineer died after falling during her descent from Patteriol in the Verwall mountain group near St. Anton am Arlberg on Sunday, ORF reported. She was flown to a hospital in Innsbruck with serious injuries but died shortly afterwards.

The woman had first cycled into the Verwall Valley before hiking to the summit along the black-marked standard route. She reached the summit at about 11 a.m. During the descent, she fell several metres over steep rocky terrain near the “Platte” and landed in a gravel gully.

Two German mountaineers heard her cries for help but could not locate her, so they alerted the mountain emergency service. Another German climber later found the woman in the gully and provided first aid. She was conscious and responsive at the time.

Because of the difficult terrain, the crew of the Martin 2 emergency helicopter recovered her using a “crash recovery” procedure and treated her at an intermediate landing site. She had to be resuscitated during the flight to the Innsbruck hospital, where she later died from her injuries.
