Safety works keep Silvretta road closed until 2030

The Silvretta High Alpine Road will not reopen to public traffic until summer 2030 at the earliest after several mudflows, ORF Vorarlberg reports.

Construction of protective structures identified after the first mudflows is currently under way and is expected to be completed by autumn 2026, illwerke vkw spokesperson Andreas Neuhauser told ORF Vorarlberg.

The road has been cleared and is passable for construction work. Its structural condition is currently the same as in previous years, before the first mudflows. No further mudflows affected the road this year.

Heat caused few problems, Neuhauser said. Measures were taken to protect workers, allowing construction to continue as planned during the heatwave. Rock-safety work announced in spring was completed in May and June.

However, the road cannot reopen early. Planning and sizing of the other required protective measures are in their final phase. The road cannot be used safely until those measures have been implemented, Neuhauser said. Authorities are expected to begin the approval procedures after detailed planning is completed in summer 2026.
