Police found suspected counterfeit euro banknotes on a 33 year old Chinese man at a large gambling venue in central Vienna, ORF reported. He allegedly intended to use the money to buy gambling chips.
An employee noticed the banknotes and alerted police. Officers took the man to a nearby police station, where a search uncovered a five figure amount of cash. The money is being checked for authenticity.
The man gave contradictory accounts of where the money came from. Police also determined that he had probably entered Austria illegally and provisionally detained him under immigration law.
On suspicion of using counterfeit money, the Vienna public prosecutor ordered that he be reported while remaining at liberty.
