Vienna unveils plans for Eibengasse quarter housing 6,000 residents

Vienna is developing a new Eibengasse urban quarter in the Donaustadt district for up to 6,000 residents, ORF reports. An exhibition this weekend is presenting the latest planning progress.

The project will include around 2,600 homes, extensive green space, two new kindergartens and local shops and services. The plans promote environmentally friendly transport, including underground rail, cycling and car-sharing. Cars will not be able to drive through the quarter.

The exhibition includes current interim designs for the individual building plots and a model of the entire future quarter. The project team’s progress is also available online.

The exhibition runs from August 21 to 23, 2026, from noon to 5 p.m., at Nordwestbahnstraße 16 in Vienna’s former Nordwestbahnhof railway station. Admission is free.

The quality advisory board for the new district recently held an interim review. Further workshops in September will coordinate issues including access and mobility, open spaces, ground-floor areas and uses, and community building across the different plots.

Work on the future energy supply and construction logistics will also be coordinated before the final review in December 2026. Construction is scheduled to begin in February 2027. Vienna has developed a separate handbook for the location covering urban planning, architecture, open-space design, sustainability and mobility.
