A 68-year-old moped rider suffered life-threatening head injuries in a crash in Rohrbach an der Lafnitz in the Hartberg-Fürstenfeld district on Thursday, ORF reported.
The accident happened at about 3.30 p.m. on the L429 Eichbergerstraße. The man was travelling from Vorau towards Rohrbach an der Lafnitz when he left the road for an unknown reason on a slight left-hand bend near Kleinschlag. He fell down a roughly three-metre embankment and came to rest in a roadside ditch.
A 76-year-old man from the Bruck-Mürzzuschlag district and a 77-year-old woman from the Hartberg-Fürstenfeld district were travelling in the opposite direction at the time. They provided first aid and called emergency services.
Investigators believe the rider lost his helmet shortly before the crash, which may have caused the severe head injuries. The Christophorus 16 rescue helicopter flew him to the hospital in Oberwart.
