Police stop Klagenfurt e-scooter rider travelling at 73 km/h

Police in Klagenfurt stopped a 34-year-old e-scooter rider travelling at more than 73 km/h with a female passenger, ORF reported. He also allegedly overtook a car despite an overtaking ban.

A passing police patrol spotted the scooter on Völkermarkter Straße as it was travelling out of the city. The woman was standing illegally behind the rider on the scooter.

At the junction with St. Jakober Straße, the rider turned right towards Ebenthal and then accelerated to more than 73 km/h, according to police. Officers followed the pair and stopped them.

Several charges possible

The rider faces several charges under Austria’s Motor Vehicles Act. Because of its power, the e-scooter was legally no longer treated as an ordinary scooter. It therefore required, among other things, a driving licence, registration and an inspection sticker.

According to police, the two people also would have had to wear helmets, and the scooter should have carried a first-aid kit. The man’s driving licence could not be confiscated because he does not have one.
