Netflix seeks 4,000 extras for Oktoberfest romcom

Netflix is looking for 4,000 extras for a romantic comedy that will be filmed in the coming weeks at Munich’s Oktoberfest, BR reported. The production will also take place at studios in Penzing that have been used for Hollywood productions.

The film’s title and cast remain secret. The casting notice does not specify an age or gender, but applicants should be able to portray Munich and the Oktoberfest as “loud, colourful, lively and unforgettable”. The production is also seeking “Bavarian originals” and Oktoberfest beer servers.

The casting is being organised by Munich production company Producer’s Friend. Its managing director, Marc Körber, said the project was a major production intended for international distribution. He said he was not allowed to disclose the title, director or international cast.

The film will be produced by Max Wiedemann and Quirin Berg, who became known internationally through the 2006 film The Lives of Others. They have also produced the Netflix series Dark.

The Oktoberfest has previously served as a film location. In Herbert Achternbusch’s 1976 satire Bierkampf, the director and actor moves through the festival grounds in a stolen police uniform, taking visitors’ pretzels and drinking from their beer mugs. The film also used extras, although Achternbusch reportedly recruited unsuspecting Oktoberfest visitors rather than casting them.
