Vienna Airport raises profit, expands military logistics cooperation

Vienna Airport increased its net profit by 7% to 123.2 million euros in the first half of 2026, ORF reported on Wednesday. The airport operator also announced a logistics cooperation with the Austrian armed forces.

Revenue rose by 0.9% to 529.3 million euros. The company attributed the profit increase to cost discipline and strong business at its foreign holdings, which offset a decline in passenger numbers at Vienna-Schwechat. Its operating result before interest and taxes improved by 9.1% to 159.4 million euros.

Capital expenditure increased to 150.8 million euros from 140.2 million euros a year earlier. The largest investment at the Vienna location was the southern expansion of Terminal 3, which is scheduled to enter service in the second quarter of 2027 and has a budget of 59.6 million euros.

Passenger numbers across the Vienna Airport Group rose by 1.9% to 19,975,392 in the first six months. Malta Airport recorded growth of 15.6% to 5,247,403 passengers, while Kosice Airport increased by 43.5% to 460,245. Passenger numbers at Vienna-Schwechat fell by 3.2% to 14,267,744, which the airport attributed to a reduced low-cost offering and the effects of the conflict in the Middle East.

From January to July, passenger numbers across the group rose by 1.6% to 24,446,132. At Vienna, they fell by 3.5% to 17,395,920. Flight movements at the Vienna airport declined by 4.6% in the first half to 107,709, while the average seat load factor increased by 1.7 percentage points to 79.3%. Cargo volume rose by 0.2% to 154,276 tonnes.

Vienna Airport slightly raised its full-year forecast because of strong traffic growth at its foreign locations. The group now expects about 42.5 million passengers, compared with 41.5 million previously, while the forecast for Vienna was raised to about 30.5 million from 30 million. Revenue is expected to reach about 1.08 billion euros, and earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation are forecast at 425 million euros. Net income before minority interests is expected to rise to about 220 million euros, or 190 million euros after minority interests.

Vienna Airport and the Austrian armed forces logistics school also announced plans to cooperate more closely in air cargo, technology, crisis logistics and training. The exchange is intended to create new opportunities for training, youth development and joint exercises, while strengthening both the airport and the armed forces.

Vienna Airport board member Günther Ofner said logistics had to function “quickly, safely and reliably” when needed. Defence Minister Klaudia Tanner said effective military logistics was the basis for the forces’ ability to survive, remain operational and sustain operations.
