Court sentences man to 12 years for attempted murder

A 45-year-old man has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for attempting to murder a 46-year-old man in Herzogenburg, ORF reported. The verdict, issued by the St. Pölten state court on Tuesday, is not legally binding.

The defendant was accused of seriously injuring the man with a knife during an argument in the victim’s apartment in early March. The victim managed to flee to neighbours and call emergency services himself.

He required intensive medical treatment for injuries to his neck. Police arrested the suspected attacker in the apartment.

During the trial, the 45-year-old said he no longer knew why he had attacked the man and referred to a blackout.

The court also awarded the private parties 4,120 euros. The defence requested time to consider the verdict.
