Kendlerpark project slips by years

The planned housing and public park project near Kendlerstraße subway station in Vienna has been delayed by years, ORF Wien reports. Construction of the housing is now scheduled to begin in summer 2027, while the park is expected to be completed from 2029.

The vacant 1,300-square-metre plot at Kendlerstraße 35-37 has been unused for years. Under a 2020 urban development agreement, Logos Immobilien GmbH may build 44 owner-occupied apartments there in exchange for creating a publicly accessible park at its own expense.

The project was originally due to start in 2021. The district administration said financial problems were behind the delays. An addendum to the agreement, concluded at the end of last year, moved the housing project’s completion to the end of 2028.

Vienna’s city gardens department said the amended agreement allows the city to build the planned park independently of the neighbouring housing project. The park is still to be financed by the construction company.

Calls for temporary use

The Communist Party of Austria, or KPÖ, says the timetable is too long and is calling for temporary use of the vacant plot. More than 700 people have signed its petition.

KPÖ spokesperson Lena Coufal said there were few green spaces nearby and that the part of Vienna’s 14th district was densely built up. “Nothing has happened in the past six years, and we do not want to wait any longer,” she said.

The office of district mayor Michaela Schüchner said temporary use would have to be negotiated with the private owner, but that the district wanted to achieve a meaningful interim solution. The owner was unavailable for comment.
