New Schloss Kahlsperg residence to offer 48 places to Salzburg

The planned new Schloss Kahlsperg senior residence in Oberalm will provide 96 places, including 48 reserved for use by the city of Salzburg, ORF reported.

The Caritas-run residence in the municipality of Oberalm has operated since 1968. The state of Salzburg says its poor structural condition means renovating the existing building is no longer practical.

The residence will therefore be rebuilt in the coming years at a cost of about 20 million euros. The state has approved the project, and Caritas plans to begin construction this year.

Oberalm Mayor Hans-Jörg Haslauer said the allocation of places to Salzburg would not leave the municipality with too few places. The arrangement was economically sensible because larger facilities could generally be operated more efficiently, he said.

Haslauer said the original plan had been to build a residence for 50 people, with demand mainly coming from Oberalm while the municipality would have borne the full cost. He described the current arrangement as a “win-win situation” for Oberalm and Salzburg.

Oberalm has also negotiated places at the new senior residence in nearby Puch, ORF reported.
