Plane dumped 60 tonnes of fuel before emergency landing in Munich

A Vietnam Airlines Boeing 787-9 dumped fuel before making an emergency landing at Munich Airport on Saturday, BR reported. The aircraft had circled for two hours after a difficult take-off. No one was injured.

What happened near Munich

According to BR information, the aircraft released fuel at an altitude of about 2,700 metres, or 9,000 feet. Publicly available information does not show the exact area over which the fuel was dumped.

Flight data showed the aircraft at that altitude in a west to east corridor over Munich, between Lake Ammersee and Pfarrkirchen. Several media reports said it released a total of 60 tonnes of fuel, equivalent to about 75,000 litres.

Why aircraft dump fuel

Aircraft sometimes have to land early because of a technical fault or a medical emergency, including at the airport from which they have just taken off. Their take-off weight can be above the maximum permitted landing weight because landing places greater forces on the aircraft than take-off.

In such cases, an aircraft may need to dump tonnes of fuel so it is light enough to make a safe emergency landing. Long-haul aircraft are primarily affected because of their design. Short- and medium-haul aircraft also often take off heavier than their permitted landing weight, but many do not have a fuel-dumping system.

Germany’s Federal Aviation Office describes fuel dumping as a reportable emergency measure intended to prevent danger. The decision rests with the pilot after the crew has officially declared an urgency or emergency situation. No additional permission is required.

Rules for fuel dumping

In consultation with air traffic control, crews must observe several requirements. If possible, fuel should be released at least 1,800 metres, or 6,000 feet, above the ground. The usual altitude is between 4,000 and 8,000 metres.

Whenever possible, aircraft should dump fuel over sparsely populated areas or bodies of water.

How often it happens

Fuel dumping occurs in Germany an average of 20 to 25 times a year. The Federal Aviation Office describes this as a low number compared with the roughly three million flights that pass through German airspace annually.

Official information on all cases is publicly available, mostly including the quantity of fuel released but not precise geographical details. The published overview covers cases from 2018 to mid-July 2026.

Environmental effects

According to the Federal Environment Agency’s current assessment, fuel dumping does not cause critical environmental pollution. It considers the effects on people and the environment to be uncritical because, at an altitude of at least 1,800 metres, most of the fuel evaporates in the air. Only a very small amount reaches the ground.

A study examined the effects of fuel dumping on air quality, soil, groundwater and human health. In response to a BR24 inquiry, a spokesperson for the Federal Environment Agency said the study still reflected the current state of knowledge.

Environmental groups and some politicians have criticised the study, arguing that new measurements were not taken across all areas directly beneath fuel-dumping zones.

Some of the fuel also contributes to overall carbon dioxide and air pollutant emissions when it is burned. The Federal Environment Agency has long called for the recommended minimum dumping altitude to be raised from at least 1,800 metres to 3,000 metres. It also says the same regions should not be exposed repeatedly.
