Austria, insurance, road accident

Most of the damage claims from a 33-vehicle pileup on Austria’s A2 southern motorway near Laßnitzhöhe have been processed one year after the crash, according to ORF. The accident happened on August 17, 2025, after a truck lost diesel because an iron bar was lying on the road.

About 150 litres of diesel spilled onto the motorway and spread across several lanes, causing multiple vehicles to skid. Thirty people suffered minor injuries, and all 33 vehicles were damaged.

Christian Kreuzer, a spokesman for Wiener Städtische insurance company, said the truck driver’s liability insurance covered the damage. The insurer received around 40 claims.

Cases involving minor property damage have been settled, but claims involving injuries or foreign parties remain open. Kreuzer said it was not unusual for such cases to take more than a year because the accident involved so many people and was particularly complex.

A final total for the damage is not yet available. According to the insurance association, no official complaints have been filed.
