79-year-old carriage driver thrown under horse-drawn carriage in Seefeld

A 79-year-old carriage driver was thrown from a horse-drawn carriage and partly run over in Seefeld in the Innsbruck-Land district on Saturday, ORF reported. He was flown to a hospital in Innsbruck with injuries of unspecified severity.

The accident happened at about 1.20 p.m. on Kreuzweg. The man was driving a carriage pulled by two horses, with four other people seated in the rear.

As the carriage approached a railway crossing, the driver stopped to wait for an approaching train. Shortly after the carriage crossed, the two horses suddenly bolted, according to police.

The driver reportedly stood up to control the animals more effectively and pull harder on the reins. He fell from the carriage and was partly run over while the horses continued pulling it.

One of the passengers reached the front of the carriage and applied the brake. The carriage stopped after about 50 metres. The four passengers were not injured.
