Rescuers bring two lost hikers to safety on Untersberg

Mountain rescuers brought two German hikers to safety on the Untersberg after they became lost in steep, rocky terrain, ORF Salzburg reported.

The 23-year-old man and 24-year-old woman had set out from the Stöhrhaus hut, at 1,894 metres on the Bavarian side, towards the mountain’s cable car summit station. Near Mittagsscharte, at 1,670 metres, they took the wrong route and could no longer continue.

They alerted the Grödig mountain rescue service shortly after 4 p.m. The seven rescuers travelled up by gondola and quickly located them. Using rope protection, they guided the pair into safer terrain towards the ski slope.

Rescuers then drove towards them on a quad bike and brought them back to Grödig. The operation ended at 8.30 p.m. after about four hours.

Grödig mountain rescuers have been called to six operations on the Untersberg in the past 16 days.
