Cold front to end Upper Austria heatwave with sharp drop

A cold front will bring a sharp drop in temperatures to Upper Austria after a final spell of extreme heat, ORF reported. Temperatures could fall by around 10 degrees by Tuesday, according to GeoSphere Austria.

Friday will remain mostly sunny, with highs of 28 to 33 degrees and moderate easterly winds. Temperatures will reach up to 22 degrees at an altitude of 1,500 metres.

Saturday, the Assumption Day holiday, will be even hotter. Forecasts call for mostly cloudless skies and temperatures of 29 to 36 degrees, with the highest values expected around Linz. Temperatures at 1,500 metres could reach 24 degrees.

Storms expected from Sunday

Sunday will begin mostly sunny across the region. In the west and northwest, cloud, showers and thunderstorms are expected from the morning, with further storms developing in the mountains and western half in the afternoon. The eastern lowlands are likely to remain mostly dry. Temperatures will still reach 28 to 36 degrees, with the highest values in the east.

A cold front will cross Austria from the northwest on Monday. Dense cloud and rain will spread from Vorarlberg to the Waldviertel from the morning, with thunderstorms also possible. The east and south will initially remain sunny, before cloud, rain and thunderstorms spread there as well.

Temperatures will fall significantly with the passage of the front. Highs are forecast to range from 21 to 32 degrees, with a noticeable drop in the eastern half during the afternoon as rain arrives. Winds will be light to moderate, becoming occasionally brisk in the north and east.

Unsettled conditions will continue on Tuesday, with repeated showers along the northern side of the Alps. Elsewhere, the sun will appear more often at first, but clouds will increase from midday. Temperatures will reach only 20 to 27 degrees, bringing the current heatwave to a markedly cooler end.
