A woman drowned while swimming in Lake Wolfgang on Sunday evening, ORF reported. The accident happened at the Gamsjaga bathing area after she was reported missing.

The water rescue service from St Gilgen reached the scene before alerted rescue divers arrived. Lifeguards immediately began searching the area near the shore with snorkelling equipment and found the woman about seven metres from the bank, in water 3.5 metres deep.

Rescuers brought her to the surface and carried her ashore, where an emergency doctor performed extensive resuscitation. The attempts were unsuccessful, and the doctor pronounced the woman dead.

It is not known how or why she drowned. Another woman drowned in Lake Wallersee on Wednesday, meaning Salzburg recorded two fatal swimming accidents within one week.

The operation involved the St Gilgen water rescue service, the Northern Diving Unit of the Salzburg state water rescue association, the local fire brigade, fire service boats from St Wolfgang and Fuschl, professional fire brigade rescue divers from Salzburg, the Red Cross, an emergency medical helicopter and police.
