Swiss flight lands in Dublin after power bank overheats

A Swiss flight from Zurich to Boston made an unscheduled emergency landing in Dublin on Sunday evening after smoke was reported on board, SRF reported. The crew issued an emergency call over the Atlantic.

A Swiss spokesperson told Blick that an overheated power bank belonging to a passenger caused the smoke. Flight LX52 departed Zurich at 6:22 p.m. and encountered the incident after about three hours, according to flight tracking data.

The aircraft diverted to Dublin, where all 206 passengers and 12 crew members left the plane unharmed. The aircraft will remain on the ground for inspections before being flown empty back to Zurich.

It was the second incident involving an overheating battery on a Swiss flight in a matter of weeks. At the end of July, a flight from Zurich to New York made an intermediate landing after the charging case for wireless headphones became trapped in a seat and overheated, producing smoke.
