Smoke forces evacuation of Munich to Nuremberg train

A regional train carrying up to 500 passengers was evacuated at Rohrbach an der Ilm station after smoke entered the driver’s cab, BR reported. The train was travelling from Munich to Nuremberg.

The driver stopped the train after noticing smoke and a burning smell. Firefighters, railway staff, emergency services and state and federal police evacuated all passengers safely.

Police said the smoke came from the locomotive’s engine room, where something had begun to smoulder. A technical defect is currently considered the likely cause.

Passengers continued their journey on a replacement train and additional buses. Emergency services provided water and other drinks because of the heat. No one was injured.

The train remains at the station while railway experts assess whether it can be towed or whether heavier equipment will be needed to remove it. The Munich to Nuremberg line is still experiencing minor delays.
