Austrian Federal Railways, public transport, Vienna rail

Rail lines north of Vienna Floridsdorf are closed until September 6 as work on the northern section of the city’s main suburban rail route enters its final weeks, ORF reported. Replacement buses are operating for commuters.

The closures affect the Northwest Railway to Jedlersdorf, the Northern Railway to Süßenbrunn and the Laaer Eastern Railway to Gerasdorf. No trains will run on these routes during the closure.

REX3 services will start and end at Korneuburg, while REX2 services will start and end at Wolkersdorf. REX1 trains will be diverted via Vienna Stadlau and Vienna Simmering to Vienna Central Station.

The closures are part of the same work already affecting the northern section of the main suburban route. Austrian Federal Railways is commissioning the ETCS 2 train control system, which it says will enable denser, more reliable and higher-capacity rail services in the eastern region.

Replacement services

For passengers from the Weinviertel region, Austrian Federal Railways has arranged replacement buses. Staff at the stations are directing passengers to the appropriate stops.

On the Northwest Railway, replacement service SV903 connects Vienna Jedlersdorf directly with Vienna Floridsdorf. Vienna Brünner Straße station will not be served during the closure. Two direct services will run from Korneuburg: SV913 to Vienna Praterstern and SV923 to Vienna Handelskai, providing connections to the U1, U2 and U6 underground lines.

On the Laa Eastern Railway, replacement services SV902 from Gerasdorf and SV912 from Wolkersdorf will take passengers to Vienna Floridsdorf. Both services will also stop at Vienna Leopoldau and Heinrich von Buol Gasse on Siemensstraße, providing direct connections to the U1 and U6.

On the Northern Railway, SV901 buses will run from Süßenbrunn via Rennbahnweg to Kagraner Platz, offering a direct connection to the U1. Two replacement bus services will continue to operate on the main suburban route between Vienna Floridsdorf and Vienna Praterstern, one direct and one with intermediate stops.

Fourteen month closure begins September 7

When the summer closures end on September 6, a 14 month closure will begin on the southern section of the main suburban route between Vienna Praterstern and Vienna Central Station or Vienna St Marx.

During that period, Austrian Federal Railways will renew viaducts, bridges and track infrastructure, extend platforms and modernise Vienna Rennweg station and Vienna Quartier Belvedere station.
