Salzburg plans to invest nearly 2 million euros in a small hydropower plant at the Fißlthaler weir on the Glan river in the Maxglan district, ORF reported.

The city’s building committee unanimously approved a basic administrative report on the project last week.

One key benefit would be a direct connection to the energy supply of the professional fire brigade in Maxglan, said Sebastian Lankes of the SPÖ, who chairs the committee.

According to the report, the plant’s acquisition costs would be recovered after about 29 years. A special turbine is intended to keep noise for local residents very low.

The city plans to begin construction in two years.
