Driver flees after fatal hit-and-run in Carinthia

ORF reports that a 20-year-old man was killed by a vehicle in the Völkermarkt district early Sunday while walking home from a fire brigade festival. The driver fled, and police are seeking witnesses.

The man had been walking from the festival in St Stefan bei Globasnitz towards St Michael ob Bleiburg. At Traundorf, he was hit head-on by an oncoming vehicle while walking along the left edge of the road, as required under Austria’s Road Traffic Act.

A local resident heard the impact and rushed to the scene. Despite first aid and resuscitation attempts, the 20-year-old could not be saved.
