Salzburg aims to become a year-round tourism destination to spread visitor numbers more evenly, ORF reported. The state’s tourism organisation says the sector generates about six billion euros in annual economic value for Salzburg.

Leo Bauernberger, managing director of Salzburger Land Tourismus, said Salzburg needed to be positioned deliberately as a destination for all seasons. The goal is to achieve strong and, where possible, consistent capacity utilisation throughout the year.

At present, the busiest periods are Christmas, New Year’s Eve, February and the summer holidays in August.

Tourists spend around six billion euros a year in Salzburg, including on accommodation, restaurants and shopping. Tourism also has major importance for the labour market, Bauernberger said. More than 50,000 people from Salzburg work in the sector.

“If the state is competitive and more local people can make a living from it, that is an important and positive development,” Bauernberger said.
