A beaver has severely damaged the dams along the Mühlbach watercourse in St. Pölten, prompting the city to close the section between Sonnenpark and the VAZ, ORF reports. The duration of the closure is not yet known.
The city discovered the extensive damage during an inspection of the Mühlbach and its dams. The beaver had burrowed beneath the dams, creating a risk of collapse and a serious danger to people using the paths.
A ban on entering the area between the bridge on Landsbergstraße and the bridge near the city sports facility took effect immediately. Warning signs have been installed.
Repairs have already been carried out regularly along the Mühlbach, but the city says the damage has become more frequent and severe as the beaver population has grown rapidly.
The city plans to begin with structural measures and develop a long-term prevention strategy. The specific measures that could be used are still being assessed.
