An escaped wallaby spotted near a school camp in the Aargau village of Dietwil has been captured and returned to its private owner, SRF reported. Children saw the animal in a forest on Thursday and reportedly considered it the highlight of their camp.
Authorities later identified the owner as a resident of the canton of Lucerne, Melanie Kocher, deputy cantonal veterinarian of Aargau, told SRF. A wallaby belongs to the kangaroo family, is smaller than its relatives and mainly eats grass.
Other unusual animal sightings
The wallaby was not the first exotic animal reportedly seen in the wild in Switzerland. In June 2010, the elephant Sabu escaped from her circus accommodation and headed towards Lake Zurich for a swim. After her handlers stopped her from entering the water, she walked towards central Zurich, where she was escorted along Bahnhofstrasse by police before being captured. Nobody was injured.
In 2019, several reports suggested that a caiman was roaming Lake Hallwil in Aargau. Some people kept their feet out of the water, fearing a bite. The animal was ultimately believed to have been a catfish measuring just over one metre long. The fish itself made headlines after it was found with an entire water bird in its stomach.
Residents of Basel also received alerts in July 2023 about an escaped variegated lemur. Staff from Basel Zoo soon recaptured the animal. In 2012, red-ruffed lemurs escaped from Zurich Zoo’s Masoala Hall and made their way to the souvenir shop.
Reported big-cat sightings have also triggered searches. In Berlin in 2023, reports of a lion led to a major operation involving police, city hunters and helicopters. Laboratory analysis showed that droppings found during the search came from a herbivore, and a wild boar was eventually believed to have been responsible.
In 2012, a game warden insisted that he had seen a panther in a forest in Solothurn. Camera traps and other measures failed to find the animal, which disappeared without a trace.
