Heat produces mixed results for Burgenland rescue services

Heat-related demand on rescue services in Burgenland varied over the past weekend, ORF reported. The Red Cross recorded no significant increase in deployments, while the Samaritan Association reported a slight rise in heat-related calls.
The Red Cross recorded 900 deployments, including 340 emergency responses and 90 involving emergency doctors. It could not determine how many were directly related to the heat.
The total was not significantly higher than either the previous week or the first weekend of August last year. During that period, when temperatures were lower, the Red Cross recorded 878 deployments.
The organisation said many people, particularly older people, appeared to be following advice for hot weather by staying indoors, drinking plenty of fluids and avoiding strenuous physical activity.
The Samaritan Association of Burgenland reported a slight increase in heat-related deployments, mainly during ambulance services. It did not provide specific figures.
On hot days, the Samaritan Association deploys an additional vehicle at each station.
