Social media videos expose suspected Bern speed offender

Social media videos helped Bern cantonal police identify a suspected speed offender accused of committing 10 offences in the Bernese Seeland region, SRF reported on Wednesday.

Police were alerted to videos on the man’s social media account by members of the public. The most serious alleged offence involved driving 147 kilometres per hour above the permitted speed limit outside built-up areas.

After extensive investigations, including commissioned expert reports and video analyses, police identified a man from the Bernese Seeland region. The footage allegedly showed him driving at 125 km/h in his municipality, where the limit was 50 km/h. On a rural road in the same region, he was allegedly travelling at 227 km/h instead of the permitted 80 km/h.

Police located the man at his home in March. He admitted the offences and surrendered his driving licence. Authorities also seized the car he allegedly used for the speeding offences.
