Andwil, police, road safety

A 21-year-old driver was seriously injured after fleeing a police check and crashing into a house in Andwil early Saturday, SRF reports. The house was so badly damaged that it is at risk of collapse.

St Gallen cantonal police tried to stop the driver in Gossau shortly after 2.35am. Instead, he drove towards Andwil at a greatly excessive speed, the police said.

Near Dorfgarage Andwil, a garage, the car touched the right-hand kerb and the driver lost control. The vehicle crossed both lanes, broke through a hedge and hit the front of the house. The driver was able to get out of the car by himself and was taken to hospital.

Firefighters had to shore up the house so the car could be recovered. As the building is no longer habitable, the municipality of Andwil arranged emergency accommodation for its residents. Police ordered blood and urine samples from the driver and confiscated his driving licence.
