police investigation, road crash, Tyrol

Police are investigating who was driving when an SUV overturned on the Gerlos Road in the Zillertal late Friday, injuring a 49-year-old German man, ORF reported. A second occupant, a 35-year-old Austrian, refused ambulance transport.

The crash happened at about 11 p.m. An automatic eCall alerted emergency services, who found the SUV overturned on the road. The injured man was taken to Hall Hospital with injuries of undetermined severity. He was found to be under the influence of alcohol.

Investigators said the vehicle may have crossed onto the wrong side of the road, been lifted by a rising embankment wall and then slid across the asphalt. There were no witnesses, and neither occupant provided information about what happened. It remained unclear who was driving.

Police investigations were continuing. The Gerlos fire brigade, an emergency doctor vehicle and two ambulances also attended the crash.
